Where We Came From

Nearly twenty years ago, when founder Cynthia Holmes discovered she couldn’t eat gluten, she found that good gluten-free cookies were hard to come by. Rather than settle for dry, crumbly stand-ins, she developed her own recipes from scratch and launched Ancient Grains Kitchen. Later, she teamed up with Karen Fischer, and together they took over another longtime Peninsula favorite, Miracle Morsels, to bring dedicated gluten-free granola and trail mix to the community. We are deeply grateful to Cynthia and Karen for their care, uncompromising standards, and the solid ground they built over all those years. We are excited to see where we can take these delicious products next.

Where we’re headed

We arrived in Washington from Ontario twenty years ago with our five kids in tow and instantly fell in love with this place. No matter where we’ve lived or traveled since, the forests, the water, and that cozy Northwest drizzle are what keep calling us home. Stepping in as the new stewards of these recipes is an absolute joy—especially now that two of those kids are working alongside us in the kitchen. With Rainshadow Kitchen, we’re officially bringing these long-running Peninsula favorites together under one banner. It’s all about honest, wholesome food that makes you feel good: uncomplicated, unhurried, and made with real, recognizable ingredients. Still handmade right here in small batches, and still so delicious you’d never guess they’re gluten-free.

Our granola

Gluten-free granola with serious texture. We toast hearty rolled oats and chewy coconut into a golden base for our classic flavor profiles, from warm pumpkin pecan and spiced ginger hazelnut to rich jamocha nut and bright summer berry citrus. Our trail mixes

Named for the wild rivers carving through the Olympic wilderness, our trail mixes are built for backcountry ridges and everyday cravings alike. We pair hearty bases of whole roasted nuts and crisp toasted seeds with distinctive additions like our signature house-made sweet agave-glazed nuts, craft bean-to-bar chocolate, plump tart cherries, and generous cuts of fiery crystallized ginger. Honest fuel made to go wherever the day takes you.

Our Cookies
